OVERVIEW
As director, producer, cinematographer, and editor for Josh!'s comeback single "Slow," I developed a multi-layered visual narrative that captured the artist's journey. The concept juxtaposed scenes of Josh painting his own cover art with footage of his everyday life—playing golf, poker, enjoying time with friends, and creating music in the studio. This visual storytelling reinforced the song's message about how his apparent absence from the music scene was actually a period of creative development and personal growth.
challenges & approach
The production faced significant challenges that demanded adaptability and creative problem-solving. When our original concept proved unfeasible due to budget constraints and artist preferences, I collaborated closely with Josh to develop a more authentic vision through multiple planning sessions.
The painting scene—a crucial visual element—encountered persistent difficulties with weather conditions at oceanside locations, with wind repeatedly damaging the canvas artwork during our first two attempts. We decided to wait for summer instead of fighting the weather of spring.
Now with the manager's release deadline looming we selected a third location further inland to mitigate ocean breezes. On this final shooting day, everything progressed smoothly until unpredictable wind began threatening our artwork again while we were simultaneously losing golden hour light. In a decisive moment, I raced to the nearest store, purchased a white bed sheet as a sturdier replacement for the paper canvas, and rapidly implemented this solution. This quick thinking under pressure allowed us to capture the essential painting sequence with the remaining daylight and meet our immovable deadline.
the result
The finished music video resonated powerfully with both the artist's team and audiences, generating enthusiastic feedback and contributing to the song reaching over 1M Spotify streams. This project showcases my ability to navigate production challenges, adapt to changing circumstances, and deliver compelling visual content that enhances musical storytelling while meeting client objectives.
